I honestly don’t know why this film is even called ‘Persuasion’? It may be an adaptation but it is just all over the place and barely adds in a true scene from the original. At best this is a silly romance story that completely disconnects the viewers from developing any real feelings toward the characters.
Also don't get me started on the random one off sentences that have been thrown in such as “I’m a 10 and you’re a 6” to somehow bring this already severely disconnected movie into the modern day.
I’ve read this book well over 10 times and it’s one of the most emotionally, desperate and tormenting reads there is. Each turn of the page is masterfully written to convey every internal working of the heart when faced with deep regret, loss and yet hope. You can’t help but feel all of the emotions as deeply as every character in the book - this film did non of that.
I couldn’t care less for one character in the whole story, they were mostly silly and I nearly nodded off at the end. Captain Wentworth was completely unbelievable.
The reason I gave it two stars is because I did actually enjoy the choice of stately homes and dresses that was obviously in keeping with the genuine era. I also didn’t mind Sir Walter Elliot and Miss Elizabeth’s adaptation. They were by far the most believable to watch.
