Slight spoilers ahead.
The beginning was terrible. I don’t know if satire was the goal or not but it seemed like there were hundreds, if not thousands of people waiting to cause mayhem in what appeared to be a small town. The constant deaths at the store just seemed so unbelievable and with the constant swearing that seemed to be there for the sake of edginess, I wasn’t eager for the rest of the movie.
The cast wasn’t bad. No mind blowing performances mind you, but I wasn’t jolted out of the immersion by the people. What they were saying however, that through me off every now and then. A lot of one liners and cheesy dialogue here and there. That’s a bit forgivable though to be fair. Some of my biggest issues were with the killings. Lots of gore is fine by me, I knew what I was getting into, but the seemingly SUPER POWERED killer able to spin human heads 180 degrees and the dumpster that cut that one woman in half were too unbelievable.
The ending of the film was also shoddy. Killer wasn’t entirely expected so that’s nice, but it all seemed rushed. There was another cheesy one liner, a lot of luck on Jessica’s part and lack there of for the sheriff, and then the weak line of “we didn’t find anything but ash… but no one could have survived that fire… ¿RiGhT?” Which may lead to a sequel that will probably be poorly done given the source material.
Additionally, I have some gripes but they’re small ones that I just want to put here but not include in the main review so if you couldn’t care less, don’t read further. At the point where Yulia is being held by the killer and the main character is face to face with them, the killer is holding an iPhone up to show that the other friends are being held captive and can be killed at any moment. Who is holding the other iPhone? Did he call and did someone answer? Is that even the case? Does he just have a camera recording them 24/7 for the sake of keeping an eye of them? If so, how did he get it on his phone so quickly when the main character showed up? Also, at the end when the main character realizes the sheriff is the killer, she has Bobby’s phone and is recording. I may be slow to the draw on this but why did she grab his phone and know to record? Didn’t sheriff not get caught until he came BACK into the room? So she would have needed to steal it when he was looking. And it took me about a minute staring at a paused shot of the evidence bag that said “Bobby’s phone” to realize that it was his phone and not hers because the killer took hers when she was kidnapped. Again, maybe I was just not paying enough attention.
Anyways, thank you for listening to my Ted Talk.
