On second episode and frankly this is tedious and cumbersome. It has invented a whole raft of new and presumably "modern" story lines which are in many respects gratuitous. The diversity angle, while understood, is distracting in these historical dramas and doesn't sit well with the reality of what black people had to suffer or indeed whole swathes of the population of the time who were literal slaves too. The tension and bleakness of what is an astonishing novel are replaced by a poor attempt at sensationalism.
