While undoubtedly visually attractive, I feel that Roma falls short for various reasons. If you don't know Mexico City fairly well, it would be hard to even know that the movie is centered in its Roma neighborhood, highlighting the idiosyncrasy of its residents and indeed the capital city. I feel that the 'political disturbances' are understated. The 'Jueves de Corpus' massacre shown in the movie occurred just three years after the horrific events at Tlatelolco and resulted in the deaths of an estimated 120 people - some of the wounded were even executed in hospital. Cuaron is known for making bold statements, but Roma seems overly nostalgic and maybe could/should have gone further.
