Zack Snyder is doing more of what he should have been doing all along: making his own, original action-adventure films. Rebel Moon is a sci fi fantasy that wears its inspirations on its sleeves but manages to create an exuberant visual language and intriguing plot threads that feel distinct and compelling for genre fans. It’s understood that Rebel Moon was repurposed from Snyder’s Star Wars pitch, but I found it to be much more aesthetically inspired by things like Space Battleship Yamato and Warhammer 40k which feels extremely refreshing. The story is very straightforward and unfortunately, the characters lack depth and moments of camaraderie. However, the movie is much more concerned with getting us to the next action scene as fast as possible and more importantly, showing off as much of its greater universe within the 2 hour run time. The action scenes are great and the designs of things like the ships, guns and robots are all pretty badass. Sofia Boutella is so physically impressive during her action scenes and that goes a long way to selling the character. This is just Part One or the first half of the story and so I’m looking forward to seeing the complete work come April. Supposedly we’re going to get a 3 hour, R rated director’s cut sometime between now and April when Part 2 drops and I’m curious as to how much it will add to the film overall. If you love fun, action driven sci fi / fantasy stories, this is an easy recommendation. Overall, I think Rebel Moon could be the beginning of a really compelling franchise so long as Part 2 is the energetic climax that Part 1 promises it to be.

A great way to end the Daniel Craig Bond films. Thematically, I would say this movie dresses well the wound left on Bond by Vespa from Casino Royale. The film is nothing but gorgeous in its cinematography and use of color. Malik does a fantastic job of selling the villain even if he is only on screen for a short amount of time comparatively speaking. My only criticism is that the final act did not have the octane action sequence that we were all hoping for. Instead it goes for a much more intimate approach in the final minutes, which may be praised or panned depending on the viewer. Overall I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the Daniel Craig Bond movies. I absolutely love Quantum of Solace as it is my favorite Bond movie of all time because it is the most non-Bond 007 movie of them all and watches more like a sleek, espionage film. So keep that in mind if you decide to take this review into consideration. Just so you know: My favorite Daniel Craig Bond movies are… Quantum of Solace #1 Casino Royale #2 No Time to Die #3 I did not enjoy Skyfall or Spectre very much. They have some good moments but overall I think they are boring, inconsistent action movies that can’t decide what to do with their plots or characters.

Based on the streets of Chicago, Captive State has a seedy, urban sheik to it that immediately separates it from run-of-the-mill, YA dystopian flicks. And though the trailers suggest a cliche “first contact with hostile alien life” type of premise, this film watches more like gritty, espionage with a hard emphasis on facism and conspiracy. The plot follows mutiple characters attempting to launch and or thwart an insurgency against their alien overlords known as “The Legislators.” In a complex game of cat and mouse, you will be kept guessing until the end as to how and why the insurgency will be successful against the seemingly overpowered alien threat. I personally enjoyed this film and I would recommend it to anyone that is wanting to see some espionage action with a sprinkle of ominous alien presence on top! WARNING! This film does not have a happy ending as it is more concerned with challenging its audience than satisfying them. If you pay attention, you will walk out with this sentiment: “THE REVOLUTION IS ALREADY HERE! And it is up to us to continue the fight!” A solid B+ Movie
