I cannot think of many films that I would think of to rate this highly.
For a 2 hour film, it is easily one of the most enjoyable watches that you could watch again and again and still be in awe of what you are seeing. The brutality of the Nazis is well highlighted to the point where it makes you feel uncomfortable even watching some of the scenes that take place (those who have seen it, probably know instantly) however, these things happened. The nazis were cruel, their cruelty knew no bounds during this era and I believe this film is a great representation of that.
For those who mentioned how cowardly Wladak is for not fighting back, can you honestly say that you would have? You would risk capture by the Nazis after being separated from your family, not knowing if they were dead or alive? Some films have instilled this hero narrative where they rise up and topple such an evil but in reality, Wladak was not in a position to do so. Yes he could have supported the break out from the ghetto but his involvement would have not changed the outcome of their lose. Human nature is to survive, especially if you are not a fighter and the pure fear in his mind would be incomparable to most other things.
My first watch of this film was in a History lesson at 15 years of age and I’m still watching it again and again at the age of 23. Everyone has their own opinions and in mine, this is without a doubt one of the greatest films to watch.
