The parents of the families all being the pretentious middle class types portrayed in Xmas adverts set the right tone.
Then the odd, scary kids turning out to just that made the film very watchable.

The best fictional account of war that I've ever read.
I've read the book several times including at present and felt like I knew the characters the first time I read it.
I may be biased as my dad was a rear gunner and just like Flash Gordon, my dad was in a reserved occupation.
Seen from both sides and the civilian angle, this is a cracker of a book
