Just finished watching an edited for TV SUBURBICON on FXM. I had read posted reviews which in general, were not favorable. This is basically a Cohen Bros film with shared writing credit including director George Clooney. The basic theme is pervasive racism hatefully, violently exposed when a Black family moves into an all-white suburban 1950s enclave. The specific focus is on a family tragedy that becomes even more sordid as the story develops. The quiet, positive thread is played out by two neighbor boys, one white, one black, whose acceptance of one another transcends the community turmoil. What is particularly interesting is the contemporary juxtaposition with anti-racist movement all across America, all across the globe. SUBURBICON was shot in 2016, before Trump's election. Now, 4 years later, in the midst of the most significant social protest I have witnessed since the 1960s, I wonder if the "professional" reviewers/critics would have the same opinions? IT certainly is timely now. 24 June 2020.
