THIS BOOK!!!
Wow!
A friend told me that it started out pretty promising and then got a little boring and dry but I strongly disagree!!
It's true there wasn't much plot, just the characters cruising along on the path of life but there were so many bumps in the road that made it interesting. It was a really great and also easy read and I sped through those pages like crazy, I never wanted to put it down. The story was simple for the most part, just typical high school life that carried on after grad but the author found a way to still make it very engaging which I applaud!!
My only two complaints are the lack of dialogue tags (it's literally always I say, he says, she says, really no variety which irked me a tiny bit) and that many of the side characters felt really one dimensional--we hardly got any descriptions of personalities or looks and I feel like if Autumn's friends had unique characteristics that would make their characters pop out instead of blending in all together....
But the ending was just so so emotional and it got even MORE emotional!!! I won't spoil this just read it and you will see.
Also! *BEWARE, SPOILER SECTION*
I'm not a fan of how they handled birth control in this book. Well, even the fact that Brooke and Angie were having sex before they were seniors (I'm pretty sure) was a bit unsettling, clearly having not thought it out properly.
Angie's reaction to finding out she was pregnant after having sex with Dave with zero protection pissed me off a bit. First, she just kinda dismissed it when all the others suggested that she should have used SOMETHING by just being all "eh, don't worry, it was just one time". And that "just one time" got her pregnant. In high school. Don't get me wrong, I love how Angie was so open and excited to have the baby and wanted to get married with Dave--all was healthy there.
But it also felt a bit airy when it turned out she was pregnant, like "oh, guys, I'm pregnant, this is great huh!" and I think Angie should have maybe been a bit more reflective, like okay, she will have the baby, great, but her reaction was almost like it was okay and normal to get pregnant in high school, which it is not and should not be nomalized and regarded as okay and normal.
And the thing with Autumn's suicide attempt. How was she found after she supposedly killed herself?? Who found her (ik one of the mothers but who)?? And how was she still alive??
A bit more detail on the last couple of very short chapters would have been nice, detailing what was going on with her, but oh well.
