So we were supposed to root for the Uber privileged to be able to maintain their privilege PLUS gain superpowers. In addition to already being born wealthy with no real responsibilities (and constantly complaining from her palace) she also gets superpowers which the main character also then complains about. She fussed about her mom keeping secrets then proceeds to give the secret security password to her friend (who turned out to be the villain) almost the next day! She complains about being forced into a life she doesn’t want yet unlike her sister she does everything she wants to do whenever she wants (protesting, rock band, sneaking out to night clubs). Aside for Disney reinforcing imperialist ideals the production quality and script were severely lacking. Even for a movie aimed at younger viewers the lack of effort was evident. They never even introduced the other characters kingdoms, everyone spoke with an American accent and the second siblings rather than endearing came across as spoiled brats. In this movie the supposed villain made more sense than the “superheroes”! Being chosen to lead a country (when you’re ill-equipped) just because you were born a minute before is a ridiculous idea but they made January seem like a nefarious villain. The villain Edmund literally just had the tenacity to act on the things the main character professed to believe when she was protesting. This is not made for 2020 sensibilities.
