A clever rom-com made enjoyable by Beatle music and sweet/tender acting of both Jack and Ellie. The self-deprecating Jack, his committed friends, and the sarcastic manager Debra were a great comedic device for the movie. Ed Sheeran obviously enjoyed his role in the plot. Ellie’s unrequited love for Jack was poignant...very touching and self sacrificial!
I especially appreciated bringing John Lennon into the plot via the parallel universe. His advice for Jack to pursue the woman he loved and tell her that he loves her as well as the exhortation to always speak the truth was a turning point to a satisfying ending.
I did not appreciate the sexual vulgarity of his friend Rock, Debra his manager, and Ed Sheeran. Very unnecessary and formulaic!
Ellie showed a natural moral compass by saying no to a “one night stand” and the final commitment to marriage and family. Their premarital sex was unnecessary to the movie and disappointing.
