Wicked holds a special place in my heart as the first Broadway show I ever saw, making it an unforgettable experience. The film adaptation, directed by Jon M. Chu, has successfully recaptured that same magic for me. Chu’s masterful direction of this monumental production ensures it appeals to both dedicated Broadway fans and the general audience. The cinematography, visuals, orchestration, vocals, and acting are all of the highest caliber—truly phenomenal.
Cynthia Erivo delivers a breathtaking performance as Elphaba, showcasing her powerful vocals and an extraordinary character arc. Ariana Grande, as Glinda, exceeded all expectations with her remarkable performance. As a long-time fan of Ariana, I initially had reservations about separating the pop icon from the character of Glinda, but she completely made this role her own. It is evident she was born to play this part, and any doubts should be dismissed—her portrayal is nothing short of stellar.
The supporting cast, including Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum, are all exceptional in their respective roles, bringing this ensemble together seamlessly.
I truly cannot recommend this film enough—it is a transformative experience. I laughed, I cried (more times than I can count), and I left the theater profoundly moved. Do yourself a favor: see Wicked in theaters and immerse yourself in its brilliance. You won’t regret it.
