Anybody who hates this movie doesn't know good Godzilla film quality. Don't listen to the critics who hate on it. Watch it for yourself.
This was definitely the best Godzilla flick in terms of action, an interesting plot (it's like DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, except Godzilla has to fight everyone with the help of Mothra and the new and improved, legendary Gotengo ship), and the one thing that has finally been fixed; an interesting human storyline!
Hallelujah!
Anyway, the movie consists of humans finally being able to trap Godzilla (who looks tough, menacing, fit (not fat like other films) and everything everyone wants Godzilla to be) who has been a trouble to mankind for decades in ice. Later on, time progresses, and suddenly, aliens mind control monsters that haven't been around since the 60s and 70s, even Anguirus, Rodan, Hedorah and Gigan! BTW, Gigan hasn't looked any cooler. They start ravaging all of the world's major cities.
With the humans unable to defeat them, they decide to go and break the G-Man out of his icy prison so that he can defeat all of his opponents.
There is a lot of boring talk, but so does every other G-flick.
Oh, did I say boring talk? Oh, I meant to say some talk, but more action, even with the humans, which is rare in these films. Yeah, the director has some homages to some American flicks he liked (Matrix-style fights, some Independence Day references), but there are so many movies that do the same. Plus, you don't really notice it as much. Not all movies are as original as you'd think.
The kaijus have DANK designs, the fights between Godzilla and his enemies are fast-paced (which even people who aren't G-fans like; trust me, I know people who like this Godzilla movie the most from its differences), epic, and like something out of a wrestling match, except better! Added CG brings more quality to this underrated flick, with a slightly more realistic feel to it. The soundtrack is not bad, either. It has a more upbeat tone to it, and the orchestra scores were composed by Keith Emerson, the guy behind songs from NIGHTHAWKS and INFERNO. This movie may be a favorite of yours, and if not, hopefully something damn near close to it!
It's a hell of an adrenaline ride, and it does everything a Godzilla flick should do! If the movie's budget weren't so high, and other things (look up trivia on this flick, you'll be surprised), and the fact that it had fierce competition like THE INCREDIBLES in theaters, this would have done well. I grew up on this (Final Wars is what got me interested in the Godzilla franchise in the first place), and to me, it deserves a spot amongst the greats, like GODZILLA V. DESTOROYAH, GOJIRA and all the other good ones. No matter what you think, you can draw something good from it. It's kinda like a Godzilla melting pot, a bit of everything wrapped into 1 awesome package. Still, the movie had more potential.
I rate it a 10/10. LOVE THIS FLICK!
