One could say that this depiction of the Vikings around 900 AD is “realistic” in that it shows the hedonistic and primitive ways of the time and its people. However, even during darker times of human history, humans did experience some joy and this movie had no showing of that side of humanity. It tried too hard to only show gory deaths, vengeful massacres, and the twisted nature of religion. It was a relatively one dimensional view albeit with beautiful cinematography. In a movie with such aesthetic beauty, the stories of the characters should match the raw beauty of the landscape. A missed opportunity.
