Just saw Toy Story 4 last night at the campus movie theatre, and I thought it was amazing. I think it's my new favourite, actually.
After 3 was such a great conclusion, I was expecting this movie to just be Woody and Buzz beating on Bullseye's dead body for 90 minutes. But they actually did have another good story to tell.
**Spoilers ahead**
The idea that Woody might not be as happy being Bonnie's toy and that a toy in that universe might actually be happier without an owner living free was a nice change of pace for both the series and Woody's character.
I also like Bo Peep being back and seeing what happened to her. And, I like that she developed into a badass adventurer that enjoys her freedom, and shows Woody that not belonging to a child anymore isn't the end of the world. Toy Story normally has a weird "happiness in servitude" theme to it. I like this movie defying that. I know they're toys, but in that world toys are secretly "people", and some would want to be their own person. For once, they didn't treat that like a bad thing.
I think the only thing to dislike about it is that it undermines Toy Story 3's "conclusiveness", But for me, I like this "ending" better so I'm fine with that.
I do think the fandom will now be forever divided over 3 or 4 being the better conclusion, though. Maybe, they could have avoided that by calling it something like "Toy Story Presents: Woody's Journey" and treating it like a spin-off? (It's very much his story more than anybody else's.)
If they did a 5th film. There's only 3 things they could do...
1.A "Woody and Bo" spin off movie (I'd watch the hell out of this, but it wouldn't be much of a true sequel)
2.Toy Story minus Woody. (Which would likely suck)
3.Having Woody and Bo cross paths with the old gang again (Which would be hard to not make contrived, but maybe they could pull it off.
