Having last watched this stylised Al Capone drama long before I became aware of my fondness for Brian de Palma filmmaking, I’m very pleased to rediscover a film that has no doubt become a mainstay in my collection.
I love the choice of ensemble, and it’s great to watch the team build a head of steam before commiserating as they once again shrink to what is less a force than a partnership, while the narrative never loses its way as Capone is inevitably brought to bear for his arrogance and self delusion.
Obviously it’s a far cry from the likes of ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘The Godfather’, but it’s no less a cinematic experience worth repeated viewings, if only to see Connery, Costner and De Niro in the same two hours. And so ultimately ‘The Untouchables’ is a classic crime story delivered in an equally classy way, and so is one movie not to be missed
