For the people who have said this mishmash is true to the books it's pretty clear they never read the books. James gets off the bus in the middle of nowhere thinking he's in Darrowby and is late to his interview? Didn't happen. James brings the wrong cat into surgery and almost loses his job? Never happened. Helen engaged to Hugh and to be married to him on Christmas Day? Never happened.
Why do screenwriters feel they have to add "drama" to the original story which I assume is what all of the above instances attempted to do. The original stories as written by Alf Wight had plenty of humor, pathos, drama, and just a wonderful overall look at life in the 1930s on the farms and towns of Yorkshire.
The only thing this new series has in common with the books and the original series (which was a pretty faithful adaptation of the Herriot books) is the title. If you want to know what Alf Wight's/James Herriot's life was really like, read the books.
