I actually quite like this movie and I think it's highly underrated.
Let us break it down: The animation is gorgeous and well inspired. Its movement is very clear in most places. It's a 10/10.
The commentary is where I am most interested and I find I have a lot of unanswered questions about the dynamics of relationships between both Judas and Jesus, Judas and Marie, and Judas and the Castle- his father and the women in the halls- assuming that the red goat (assuming Satan) is his father.
It's clear that Judas has a clear crush on Marie in both his childhood, teen years, and finally in his full adulthood. The only slip up by him, which may be considered with his rearing in the Sex Castle, was the creepy pictures he took of Marie. It kinda clear he doesn't even know what he did wrong, based on his dismissal of the situation. Later, when Marie gets shamed by Jesus and it appears that Judas sticks up for her, he isn't truly 'that bad'. He's still a perverted guy, mind you, and he's not off the hook for that, albeit the implication of not knowing he did wrong. In the end its clear that Marie actually loved the freaky dude.
His and Jesus's relationship is stranger yet. Jess clearly has a home life that is soft and welcoming- but I think its implied that Judas just finds him annoying. Which Jesus is throughout the entire movie. In his childhood and teen years it's clear that he's more of a 'pure being', but the scene in his 30's when he whips himself is a trope about being an actor. Stuck up and full of himself to the point where he shames Marie instead of the men sexualizing her, putting a crown of thorns on his own head, and going to the Swinger's Club without paying. Then it becomes more obvious in his 'death' scene where it is just a set.
I would have loved to see a longer video, maybe that explained the Sex Castle and why Judas moved out of it. Would have also liked a record of Satan Singing.
