Unreadable. The story is everywhere and nowhere at once, the characters are flat and generally not likeable on any level, and there's multiple concepts that are mentioned and then dropped at the drop of a hat. I had to read this in middle school, and even as a middle-schooler, I knew this book sucked. When I went back years later, I was sad to find it didn't get better with age. The weird [spoiler] explanation that the main character got spray-painted in his eyes by his brother and his parents just didn't want to tell him is bizarre. Was I supposed to also think the parents are terrible and neglectful people, as well as thinking that the brother was a psychopath?
Also, as someone who also has very, very bad eyesight, the weird emphasis the book kept putting on the main character's eyesight problems were kinda weird. It sucks, but they act like he's lost a leg.
