I think Luca was a very enjoyable film with a great message.
The characters (for the most part) were all likeable and none of the friendships (which were a key part of the film) felt forced. Luca, our main character was a decent one, even if his personality was a little overdone, and Alberto and Guilia were great too. The villain of the movie was really entertaining as well.
I think the plot was quite simple, especially for Pixar, but honestly, for me, it was kind of like a breath of fresh air. Don’t get me wrong, I love most of the heavier Pixar films a lot, but it was nice to just take a step back and not ponder about the meaning of life for once.
I loved the settings for the story, especially the human town, where most of the story takes place in. It’s so lively and fun, on top of being very pretty. However, I would have liked to see more of the sea monster’s life.
Honestly I only really have a few issues with the film. One of them is that Luca’s mother seems a little bit controlling and manipulative. I mean, I know it can’t be easy to be a parent, but sending your child away for a whole season with someone they haven’t even met before, seems a bit extreme. Also, the way she tries to comfort Luca after telling him this, by saying that she loved him especially made me uncomfortable, and I know that if I were in Luca’s position, I probably would have been just as upset and angry as he was.
The second problem I have is that I think that the town accepted sea monsters far too quickly. Like, a moment before, they were brandishing their harpoons at Luca and Alberto, and the next, they were completely fine with it. It just felt a bit rushed and forced.
I have a few more problems with it, but honestly they’re very small problems and don’t really deter from the viewing experience. Even with its flaws, Luca is a lovely film, and I would recommend it to everyone.
