Plot- 4/10
Character- 5/10
Visual- 9/10
I watched this mainly cuz it looked similar to Alice in Borderland, Liar Game and Kaiji. I was disappointed but it's a good series for beginners of this genre. There is little to no point of comparing this show to other similar movies or shows with similar concept. The concept is not original and could have been thought of by every person in each country without the people ever meeting. The originality comes from the execution of the story.
SPOILER HEAVY
Unfortunately for Squid Game, the execution of the concept is mediocre at best. At the end of the day, it was a game for the amusement of the mega rich (to this point, the Japanese has works that portrays this point tons better). The struggle of the MC makes no difference at the end, the struggle of the other characters very pretty much negligible and the efforts of the cop doesn't pay off in the first 9 episodes because they are fishing for a second season. The reveals were hella predictable even all the way to the end. It was mediocre at best.
The story is lacking in the human elements especially in the MC. I had a ton of problem connecting with the MC as his character personality is a bit unusual as MC. His motivation makes little to no sense to me. He was against the game and then into the game and then not again- I get it, his personality is wishy washy and pretty much stays the same all the way to the last episode. It seems pointless to then show in the last episode that he want to re-enter the games supposedly with a renewed conviction to stop it.
I have problems with how the show tried to execute the stories. In the first episode, they establish one MC and we pretty much follow his story all the way to the end. In the middle of the show, they then proceed to show the humanity of players which to me at this point is pointless. I would have rather sympathise with those characters in earlier episodes so that their deaths had more impact but nope. We get the sad stories in that episode and they die the same episode. Pointless.
Pretty much the deaths of each character were set in stone in the first episode and the creators didn't bother writing plot twists after the first episode. I know there were plot twists, what I'm saying is the plot twist of the players' fate. Nothing was surprising when they died, I was pretty much 'they're dead, no surprise there'. The matter of which they die were not surprising either. The gangster dies from vengeance with the loud lady, no surprise there. The good natured Ali got backstabbed, no surprise there. That girl killing herself to let the North Korean girl live, god damnit it was textbook! In other words, the writing of this show is mediocre. It's boring.
So what were the good points of the story? They did put in an adversary in the police (there's not much to say for him either since he's morally ambiguous and pretty much failed at the end), the organ trafficking with a player twist (that ended up being a textbook end as well), I suppose the childhood games in the story were good though I would have preferred the games in different orders (like the Squid Game be the 2nd game cuz the body count it could generate suits a second game more that as the last)- that's about it.
