I really enjoyed this book. Lisa See never disappoints and her research is impeccable. I think the Island of Sea Women and some of her earlier works were more captivating with plots that motored forward—this was a slower read, more of a character study. Since it’s based on a real person, it’s more vignettes, but that’s ok. I learned a lot and was pleased to read it!

I think it’s boring with stilted dialogue and predictable plot points. I didn’t like any of the characters and finally stopped at 83%. I found it to be very dull and repetitive.
