This was just cringe worthy… Don’t get me wrong, there are some moments in this film where it was REALLY GOOD, but the start and the end feels rough, it’s just, cheesy. To the point that you find yourself asking “who the hell thought this was a good idea?”
The first movie was cheesy at times but pulled it off well, this one though… Thumbs down.
The part where Bodi was having the experience of fame and followers was great, it shows how easy it is to get lost in the moment and forget where you came from, but then the message is re-enforced, and then again, and again, and… You get the point. It’s almost like the writers saw the point where they should stop and though “ah who cares push it further”…
The reason I bring this up, is because this really has the potential to be an amazing film! It could’ve gone another direction, where the end shred off didn’t happen and Bodies friends didn’t forgive him so easily.
A point to raise is the younger fans in the film were done perfectly, they acted like real die hard fans and honestly, really well done!
The wolf in sheeps clothing, really clever. But the wolves never had any intention of becoming rock stars, they wanted to eat the sheep and take over the village, which Bodi’s dad refers to plenty of times, it’s almost as though the plot got lost and the writers of Rock Dog forgot their roots, a little ironic…
Speaking of the dad, I get the whole “dad’s trying to be cool but it’s cringy” thing, but he wasn’t like that in the first movie, he was tough. So why change his character so much? This could’ve been eased in for more of a comedy effect.
Now, don’t get me wrong. This isn’t just a bit of a moan about the film, there were REALLY good parts, mentioned above and I just wish there was more of that! Rather than… Well the load of rubbish that was thrown in.
The sculpture could’ve been utilised more for example. The key chains could have had some bigger meaning. The avalanche was cleared up by one strike of a guitar from Bodie, he’s not a superhero and that”s the mistake the writers made here!
What if, instead of a rushed ending, they looked back at the first movie and took examples from when Bodi was learning to play the guitar and found his power? They could of had it so as when Bodi was thrown out of the building in the middle of the film, that he was upset and played himself a little tune that was heartwarming to him, maybe even that same tune, it could melt the ice or something? That would’ve been far better than a single strike of a guitar and poof everything is fine.
Again, THIS HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL! And it’s just been missed, entirely. So many opportunities missed and replace with cringy stuff, to the point I had to force myself to sit through it, moments away from turning it off…
The beginning and the end is exactly why this movie lost 2 stars. The wolves could’ve been a little more evil, they could’ve succeeded more slowly for more of a challenge. Maybe the main villain could have targeted the wolves to turn them into those zombie like creatures and gather in the park to infect more of the villagers?
I’m rambling now, but PLEASE, if you read this review - and I am speaking directly to the producers, take this on board, you can still come back from whatever this is and you can make one hell of a film. Oh and one last note, don’t try to cram as much references to the first film in as possible, hints and basic scenes are cool, Carl is funny, but the rest of the references really didn’t have to be there…
