This movie was recommended to me by the kitchen manager at a community kitchen where I volunteer. He has worked in LA and said that this film captured the LA food scene, not at the high end but at the level of the multitude of distinctive neighborhoods that make up this sprawling city.
The movie exceeded my expectations. It is not the first, physical impression that Jonathan makes that wins you over. It is his voice, his intelligence and his talent for both writing and celebrating the people who make the food in LA’s hundreds of community restaurants.
The film does not hurry. It’s purpose is to tell a rich story: the story of the city, its immigrant communities and of one appreciative man who brings all of along for a beautiful ride.
