Despite a cast that includes Mae Whitman, whom I always enjoy watching, Up Here doesn't work. I am a huge fan of musicals and am old enough to remember Cop Rock, which I believe was the first attempt at a musical TV series. After the first two episodes I couldn't put my finger on the reason it wasn't appealing to me. Maybe I was just in a funky mood. Then I read that there were songs from the writers of Frozen. That was it! The leads are good strong actors, but the music and lyrics are cartoonish, not sharp or particularly witty. The melodies and instrumentation don't lend themselves to adult themes. The choreography is weak and uninspired. The story has potential because we all succumb to the voices and tapes in our head, but the show would be much better as a dramedy. For me, it just doesn't live up to Crazy Ex-girlfriend, Apple's TV's Spirited, or Zoe's Extraordinary Playlist. My score C+.
