As a massive fan of Haim for years, I wanted this movie to be so good. I had the highest hopes, and was craving the 70’s nostalgic aesthetic, the music, the costume. There were only a few cinemas showing this movie, so I actually made quite an effort to go see it, because I really was looking forward to it.
I’m about 10 minutes in, and I couldn’t actually believe that the plot features a 25 year old woman falling for a 15 year old boy. Surely, I thought, this cannot be the plot.
But it is.
Followed by completely irrelevant cameos, plot all over the place, not to mention the romanticism of a completely inappropriate relationship.
I am stunned that there are such high reviews for this movie.
If I was anything going in to see it, I was biased. But I honestly could not even pretend this movie was good. I’m so disappointed.
I’ve scrolled through reviews, hoping they’d change my mind, that maybe I’d simply misunderstood.
No fault to the actors, costume or cinematography. They were great. I’d love to see Alana Haim in another movie that does her justice. The plot was just really awful.
I just can’t see passed the romanticised pedophilia. There’s just no need for it, I don’t care if it’s “of it’s time”. They make it seem as though it’s not only okay, but somewhat encourage it. It just makes you uncomfortable.
