It has it's flaws but if you get passed those, it's a well-rounded film that lets you sink in to the story and enjoy the journey.
There are things the film is not which make it refreshing to watch.
It's not pretending to be more than what it is, nor it's pretentious and preachy. It does not pretend to be hardcore sci-fi nor that is the true point of it. It is an 'artpiece' story with a sci-fi backdrop. You could switch the AI theme with another context and it would still work, as a story and as a movie. There are certain parallels to be made not just within the US vs world content, but also 'us' vs 'them' timely argument.
This overall storytelling elements and the great acting from the two main actors are enough to oversee certain flaws such as not explaining how everything works or more depth to secondary charscterd which really aren't necessary nor would they add anything to the story. On the contrary, that is an addition to the film as all that extra fluff usually dilutes the message and convolutes the story. In short, the story was lean with just the right amount of fat.
