I thought the most of the descriptive scenes in this book were indulgent and was mostly gore for gores sake. Couldn’t help but feel it was written to shock and nothing more as it missed ample opportunities to extend on other factors of the new world she had built. The themes were interesting but not really explored- they were written off in lazy metaphors and scenes at the zoo where regardless of the situation, Marcos would react in the same way. The characterization was weak, as not one of them seemed three dimensional in any form and everything seemed to come down to their appetite. The sex scene was ridiculous because of all the forced symbolism with blood and flesh. And then the ending. Everything Marcos was built up to be - empathetic, moral, one of the last beacons of humanity- was erased. It felt like less of a twist and more of a waste of time. It’s not a 1 star book but I really don’t understand the hype for this one. Just seems like a cheap thrill without any substance or, pardon the pun, food for thought throughout.
