0 stars for quality of acting, plot, script. 5 stars for set design, lighting, location, costume, choreography, music - anything involving the visual or auditory gets 5 stars. This film was completely let down by the cliche amateur acting and most of all by the script and plot development, not to mention the unlikeable characters. You're supposed to feel something but can't summon up any feelings for any of the characters who are simply unlikable - particularly the diva Roxanne who has married Christian based only on his looks. Plot development is completely lame and weak - blindsiding you with one thing then another with no time whatsoever for dramatic tension. The star of the show for me was a bit part actor in the middle of a cave with mud all over his face (the third to sing of the three sending letters home) who acted superbly though his song - very believable. The maid did well. Cyrano did well .. but the other 2 leading characters were so lacking. Imagine Kirsten Dunst or Carey Mulligan - they would have given Roxanne so much more depth. I would have given anything for an actor the caliber of Morgan Freeman or Denzel Washington as Christian .. cliche 'I am in love' facial expressions and 1D amateur acting doesn't do it for me - I want something rich and believable, nuanced and masterfully done ... Hollywood needs to go find some young Morgan Freemans and Denzel Washingtons.
