I watched the pilot episode and couldn’t get half way through it. The main character Anne is histrionic and overbearing. Her speech style feels very unnatural and forced. I’m sure the actress is great, but the directing and the script just depict Anne as a manipulative teenager. So poor directing and poor script writing. For example: The loud sobbing when she finds out she will be sent back: just felt rehearsed and honestly: I don’t expect a child terrified of adults to throw these kinds of display of needs and fits of rage. Someone who has been terrified all their lives will most likely keep it shut around her caregivers to ensure her survival (talking from experience). Also honestly her speech style feels pedantic and flowery and corny. Even in marry poppins by Disney the dialogues were better and more believable. Seriously: whoever speaks like Anne in real life at any given point in history. I’m sure the book is great. Shame the adaption is so over the top.
