This is my first review, and I was so moved by the film to post about it.
This movie was so disappointing - The married couple with no collateral or savings somehow got funding for this farm, somehow got workers (what were they paid? and from what funding? and how much did they get in order to get started and what was the turn around for what they sold? it seemed like they only sold eggs for a while?)
Anyway, it reminded me of Into the Wild. Chris McCandless ventured into the wild without anything helpful other than a book. This may be controversial, but his sense of importance in thinking that the book and his wits would be enough for him to live in the wild.
And this married couple did the same with a farm, with so much loss of life and food, all because they relied on a man named Alan who was dying. And then when he died, the focus was solely on them and their plight now that he was gone. Anything that was said after he passed came across as so selfish as if he was horrible for leaving them without preparation or warning? In addition, he seemed to have died a few years into the project and once he passed there were problems that arose from which they evantually figured out for themselves (for example, the snail and duck solution). Are you honestly telling me that the amount of time you spent with Alan, learning from him, you didn't cover these things? And that he knew he was dying, and I would have imagined he would've passed this onto the couple?
I felt they were entitled, and extremely lucky people in way over their heads just because they wanted this ideallic fancy life but with no effort made into actually understanding the hard work.
Positives from this film were the visuals, which lucky for them the husband is a camera operator. And the film bringing to light the concept of traditional farming with 'nature working itself out'.
However, overall, this movie was a frustrating tale of people who were in way over their head thinking they could 'just do' something because they read a few books beforehand. This movie should have been about Alan and his life, because this movie and their farm would not exist without him.
