I love the book, one of the few who did apparently. But the show is a disjointed mess that pounds eerieness every second of every episode, which weakens the emotional depth and natural creepiness of the book. I would even say that the original story is not so much creepy but heart-wrenching, but the show flips it to be more creepy.
Even though I know and love the characters, I'm having a hard time connecting with them in the show. Additionally, Clive Owen and Julianne Moore should not be playing their characters at 22 yrs old in flash backs. It's distracting and almost comical that the showmakers thought they could get away with that.
Writing is borderline cheesy, and Owen's acting is stiff. I'm going to finish the series, but it's so far giving me none of the emotional satisfaction of the book.
