This movie is a very fictionalized account of James C. Dempsey's adventures as a submarine commander during WW2. The movie takes a lot of liberty with the actual facts but Dempsey did indeed rescue a rather large group of people (for a sub) including women during a sea battle with the Japanese. His sub was named "Spearfish."
