It’s clear at a glance that Grisham is doing something different here, writing three unrelated stories in one book. From many of the responses here, you would think he’d done something really wrong, but of course not. American literature has a great tradition of short stories that we tend to overlook in our never ending search for the great novel. But not everything has to be 300-plus pages. Grisham has given us an amazing run of novels, some great, some good, all well worth reading, not to mention his sports novels and kids’ stories.
Why shouldn’t he try this anthology format for a change? I doubt if anyone slagging this collection has read all of his full-length novels yet. So let’s loosen up and try something different. I just finished the third of the stories and I think it was well worth reading and, honestly, didn’t need to be any longer. Write on, John, in whatever format suits you!
