Anyone who rates this movie poorly because they didn't grasp the plot lacks media comprehension. Which is, frankly, a you problem and I would be embarrassed to out that in public display.
At its core this movie was about an occupying force trying to force their beliefs on the indigenous people, widely ending their traditional ways and causing an imbalance and revolt of the land/ancient magic they lived with and then not understanding why it happened. Told through the eyes of an emotional story of a man trying to save and protect the child he took in. It's a very simple, easy to grasp plot and I thought it was really well done.
No one was trying to copy studio ghibli, the animation was lovely on its own merits, and the music held up though I won't rave about it. I really enjoyed this movie.
