The Highway
The Highway of Spirit and Bone
A Review
David, the protagonist of Steven Ostrowski’s debut novel, pushes buttons in me I didn’t even know I had.
The life event of moving David’s aging mother across country to live nearer to another sibling and her family is the catalyst for a tightly written odyessy full of revelations illustrating how we can become very different people the moment we leave home.
Who David thinks he is as a person is challenged by larger than life characters all across America from east to west with near biblical vistas and weather between the mountains and desert.
Mysterious estranged older brothers, a complicated younger sister who rides with mother and David in the van; wives, sons, daughters, fathers and ex-lovers all are either present on the Highway or their spirits follow, haunting these travelers at every turn. And they all have secrets.
Lefora publishing did a beautiful job with Ostrowski’s words by printing them in an easy to read format perfect for the armchair or the passenger seat of any plane, train, or automobile.
This is a good read especially around the holidays when family drama and travel seems to peak for us all.
