This is the most amazing film I have ever scene. I am writing this review to set the record straight on this film. Many people have reviewed this film and most of those people don't COMPLETELY understand what is happening. Many people say this movie has no plot and is just a fleeting love story. Actually, love is the plot of the story. 'What we wont do for love', to be exact. People will do anything for love. People will hurt themselves and people will hurt the ones they love if they believe that to be what it takes to keep love. Evelyn, the younger submissive woman so desperately wants Cynthia's attention, not just her affection but her unyielding undivided attention. Evelyn wants Cynthia to scrutinize and dissect her (Evelyn) the way she (Cynthia) scrutinizes and dissects insects. Evelyn does not just wanted to be dominated she wants to be mastered, she wants to be placed placed under a microscope and slowly dissected. This is why Evelyn instructs Cynthia to be dominant, this is why Evelyn criticizes Cynthia, this is why Evelyn has poor behavior throughout the film, Evelyn wants the love you feel when someone devotes all their attention to you. When Cynthia becomes more strict with Evelyn during their dominatrix roll play this is exactly what Evelyn wants. She wants to be tortured and controlled because in order for Cynthia to truly torture and demean Evelyn, Cynthia has to first pay attention to the fact that she (Cynthia) was not being demeaning enough in the first place and that Evelyn has being crying out for Cynthia to be more strict and demeaning the entire time. Cynthia becomes more strict and more demeaning and this comes as delight to Evelyn. Spoilers!!! In the end the two stop their role play for a time when it becomes a strain on Cynthia becuase Cynthia was only doing these dominatrix things to satisfy Evelyn. Cynthia does not enjoy the role play nearly as much as Evelyn. They stop for a time only to start again later on. This parallels the butterfly discussions that occur throughout the film as butterfly hibernation patterns are discussed throughout the film. Also some people believe that in the middle of the film Evelyn is saying Pinastri to be released from the box, because this is the safe word to end her torture. I believe the this word was chosen because it sounds similar to the phrase 'be nasty'. The first time I saw the scene where Evelyn spends her first night in the box I thought she was saying 'be nasty'. This would make sense because what Evelyn actually wants is for Cynthia to cruelly punish her rather than let her out of the box. She (Evelyn) is not saying pinastri to escape the box she (Evelyn) is saying pinastri to see if Cynthia will realize that she (Evelyn) is giving a false cue. Evelyn does not want mercy she wants to be scrutinized and she wants her lover to realize this but the only way that Cynthia could realize what Evelyn really wants is if she (Cynthia) devotes all of her attention Evelyn. * * * * * This movie is a cinematic marvel. It may take you several viewings to fully process all that is happening.
