I'm 65 hours in and I just want to be done with wild mess of a game.
Every single positive with PLA also comes with a strong negative. Example:
The stealth "hunting" you do comes off very smooth and engaging at first. However, you soon learn that the games stealth system was not balanced with world traversal. As long as you are on foot, you can play the game with little to no problems...albeit your playthrough is gonna be 150 hours instead of 80-90 hours. But as soon as you try to take advantage of one of the many "rides" the game has, you quickly see how bad the system actually is. I could be running around the first area on my Wyrdeer, looking for shinies and level 5 Shinx will still aggro me (despite me having over 10 level 100 pokemon). My experience with modern rpgs has taught me that being a higher level typically means easier content. Hell, even Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has enemies just ignore you once you were 2x their level.
Another example:
Combat. In pokemon games, this usually the one part of the game that likes to bring out some challenge. Not anything crazy like endgame Bravely Default 2, but just enough challenge to feel good about winning.
Arceus tried to "simplify" the combat by completely removing traits, removing moves like sand attack, and completely changing how debuffs work (ie you don't fall asleep, you just get debuffed like paralysis). On top of this, the removal of IVs/EVs and them being replaced with the pebble grit system absolutely butchered combat. To put it simply, my lvl 61 Samurott got hit with a tackle from a lvl 6 Shinx and it took 15% of my health. And this gets even worse with the Agile/Strong style feature. Enemies can get up 3 hits in a row. For a game that is historically built on a system of 1v1 or 2v2 to change to what Arceus has is a terrible mistake on Gamefreaks part.
To end this book of a review, I'll throw in some positives:
The music is actually great.
The story is top notch and often feels as if the game was an entire season of Pokemon Journeys (which is great btw) crammed into it.
The idea of filling out your pokedex by interacting with the pokemon in different ways is amazing. You can learn a pokemon's favorite food, gather those ingredients, and craft some really useful bait (or just toss the raw ingredients, it works but not as good) and then use that bait to make an easy catch of a really high level Alpha.
If google used a 10 star system, I'd give Arceus a solid 6/10. It can definitely be a lot of fun and provide entertainment for weeks upon weeks...but I feel as if I have to force myself to keep playing so I can finally get my shiny Zorua ghosty boi. The amount of poorly thought out development decisions is impossible to ignore.
**EDITED**
I originally posted this as a 3 star (6/10) game. This was about the time I was entering endgame content.
Now, I'm aware that every Pokemon game revolves around Stockholm Syndrome. The PokeFans will go through some of the dumbest gameplay in gaming history for shinies/alphas and turn and say "Man that was a good game!"
I'm here to say, DO NOT GO THROUGH THE ENDGAME UNLESS YOU ARE GRABBING THE LEGENDARIES. It is significantly less painful to get through Scarlet/Violet and breed the Hisuian variants in that game for a shiny (dont forget to give the hisuian an everstone).
What a dumpster fire. 2/10
