I too was disappointed in the book, after the years of anticipation. The detail was impressive, spanning technologies, genres, countries and…time.
While I was reading this, four movies came to mind that sum it up.
1) From Dusk till dawn (Movie). This book feels like it was written by two authors with a mutual disregard to pacing and genre continuity.
2.) Jack Ryan. Clichéd “don’t’ go on holiday in the middle east” content. But even slower paced.
3.) I am Legend. Dystopian future sci-fi with little disregard to believability (where do I start?) or even logic (burn the houses down?). Slow paced in the wrong parts, getting lost in detail. Too fast at the end, but by then I was ready to be done.
4.) Life of Pi. I kept waiting for the incredible plot twist of “it was all a lucid dream… or was it?” closure…but the story clung to the sci-fi plot too tightly and missed its last chance of redemption.
