I had really high hopes for this movie, especially as a Dad who played Barbies with his daughter and purchased all of the animated movies. I’ve even had some of the Barbies songs on my playlists. 😂
The opening scene of girls smashing baby dolls to pieces while a larger than life Margot Robbie stands above them was a bit disturbing. I wondered what kind of message it was sending to my nearly 16 year old daughter sitting next to me.
I liked the diversity and inclusion (different races, different body types, there was a woman in a wheelchair in one of the dance scenes). I liked the set design, the color, the outfits.
The movie started out promising, but it delved into a complete mess. I wish the producers had found a way to enable both the Barbies and the Kens to work TOGETHER.
I left the movie feeling let down and disappointed. It felt like, “what did I just watch?” I actually apologized to my daughter and her stepsister for taking them. They remarked they would have rather watched a horror movie instead.
My recommendation? Wait for Netflix.
