I’m going to be absolutely blunt and direct. This show has immense potential and scope to genuinely be one of the most unique blockbusters of the 2020’s, as it depicts what modern teenage relationships are like and followed a truly staggering plot. At the the same time time I strongly believe that the LGBTQ community has been vastly overstated and emphasized and that I believe is what is fundamentally wrong with the show. When I say overstated I don’t mean the strong A rated homosexual scenes, but simply the amount of lgbt relationships in the show, it’s unrealistic to say the least. Studies suggest that only a minority of 8-10% of the UK population makes up the lgbt community yet upwards of half of the relationships between characters shown are homosexual and queer in nature. If they only had say 1-2 realtionships (for example continuing Eric’s journey etc) it would have still been an accurate depiction and well-thought of character plot, but the fact that literally half the charterers are homosexual is beyond alarming to say the least. Furthermore arises political issue of the show in season episode 3, Jean Melbourne overly vilifies being a conservative and essentially disregards family traditions, and I understand the tv show is all about being modern etc but I just feel that it is an exaggerated, cliche and bias show made for modern day pro-lgbt liberals, I’ve barely reached episode 4 and I already believe it’s losing its plot, the only factor that has kept me somewhat engaged is the tension between Otis and Maeve, however sooner or later I believe I will be forced to discontinue watching this show indefinitely.
Before I make my last point I just want to say that I am simply voicing thoughts that I’m sure have crossed some viewers minds. On that note, I believe that just like the lgbt community, the casting of this show has also been massively inaccurate. I understand the show is all about diversity and inclusion, the amount of black characters has also been over exaggerated, the UK only has a black population of 3%, yet somehow once again the black characters make up around half the cast remembers… where do I even begin. I just believe it is wrong and that shows these days are simply exceeding the boundaries and just going by what they believe would politically please the public and it’s wrong. I am not a racist and am of color myself, FYI before people start calling me out.
