I read this book in 2010 and again in 2024. Fire is our main character, a young woman that is burdened by an unceasing genetic power that she never wanted and wishes to only use for self defense. Her power is a danger, not just to others but herself as well. Always the target of too much resentment, bitterness, jealousy, distrust, attention, affection, hate, love… the target of never ending “too much.” Fire comes to us readers already broken in her heart. We witness her grow and change for the better, but not without a great toll on her, her friends and the kingdom they call home.
Our secondary characters are a compelling cast from different walks of life — all dealing with an impending war, political complications, and the fallout from the (previous) King & Fire’s Father (Cansrel) alliance as well as Fire’s effect on our characters’ state of mind.
I thoroughly enjoyed diving into the world Cashore created in this book, hated that it ended. How can I compel Cashore to give us more Fire? 👀
