This movie is not for everyone, it is a piece of art. If you were expecting this love and heartwarming movie then this is not for you. Some ppl in the comments were saying that this deserved to be on a stage and not on screen because it did not have a plot . I disagree, Filmmaking is a from of art meaning artist should be taking risk when it comes to making their films or else it is just a commercial capitalist movie. This is why this movie is so great. It is different because it is REAL. It is not the classic Hollywood film were the ending is satisfactory and that is the point it's REALITY life doesn't end well or it won't ever turn out the way you want it to.
Cinematography : A lot of people in the comments were saying that putting the movie in Black and White was unnecessary on the contrary it made the movie more meaningful and beautiful. Every shot was beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. And I think that making the movie in black and white fits the mood of the film perfectly, you are supposed to feel claustrophobic and uncomfortable and mentally exhausted as they fight and that's what helped the movie feel that way, so it was the perfect cinematic decision.
Script: Some people didn't like the dialogue because it felt forced and long and repetitive. I think it was good although I do feel like the movie could've been shorter and cut a few things and it does get very repetitive that sometimes it took out the meaning of what they were saying. But, if he had cut a few things it would have been perfect. I do like that somethings were repetitive because is was realistic. When someone fights for a long time it often gets repetitive so I do understand what Sam was trying to do with the script, and he does nail it and he did do a good job, but it was overly done the movie could have been 20 min shorter or more. But what I do think it was authentic, I did like the messages of the film and how it all happened after a movie premier it feels like this was an extended scene from a movie, which I loved. The reason why I liked the story its because the plot doesn't matter what matters is the character dynamic something that many filmmakers do not focus on too much, it was an ordinary and original story which was well done as well as the points that were brought out in the movie like not feeling appreciated being self-centered, drug use, criticism and Failure in carrer this kind of reminded me of La La Land.
Performance: Many people in the comments did not like zendaya's performance nor John David Washington but I think they were perfect for the role. Although sometimes it was hard to believe Zendaya's in a few scenes like the knife scene overall they both did an amazing job. Zendeya's last monologue was Oscar worthy it was not overly dramatic it was perfect and emotional aswell as the scene in which she asks why she was not casted was perfectly done she really put out those tears and her tone was perfect for the emotions she was trying to potray. Her performance surprised me I am very glad to see her in mature roles. I liked how this was out of her confort zone. Now as for John David Washington he did amazing his responses to Zendeayas lines were great and believable he really does know how to play a manipulator cause he sure manipulated the audience as well as potraying this egomaniac was perfectly done. These to really did a great job on changing the point of view of the audience wen it came to their relationship. hey both played Humans, humans with flaws.
Overall:8/10
