*SPOILERS!*
I didn't even know this movie existed until my sister and I were searching for something horror to watch. The events and story telling of the film was actually well played throughout, but I think it passes for more of a psycho-paranormal thriller, rather than true horror. It kept us guessing, on the edge of our seats and a few good jump scares are tossed in as well.
It also plays well at representing the human psyche when it comes to mental illness or abnormal human behavior; are we crazy? Or is it something our minds make up in the wake of trauma to "deal?" There's a lot, I noticed, that could be applied in a conversation about today's mental health struggles.
That's said, the ending.....eek. I was so hoping that the main character brother, Tim, was actually never released from the mental institution and that his entire family had been killed (maybe even by him because of the mirror) or something that would kind of just twist the movie on its head. I love endings like that. Alas, that's not what happened and he finds himself returning to prison (where he was for killing his father as a boy, for the murder of his sister (whom he kills because of the tricks of the paranormal entities in the mirror itself.
All in all, it was good, though. Worth a watch.
