The hype behind the movie made me have high expectations. I dressed up in my cute pink outfit and went to watch it, but was very disappointed, as, i found it to be quite mediocre.
Pros: Very cute set and the costumes designers should be commended. The acting was great as should be expected from the alist folks they had in there. Also a few surprise guest appearances from some of my faves. The highlight
of the movie for me was when Ken was in the scene. His wit was refreshing and i actually laughed out loud a few times. Weirdly enough, i had thought the casting for Ken (Ryan Gosling) was a little random - i said Zac efron would’ve been a better fit- but Ryan did a fantastic job.
Cons: The movies plot was a little incoherent. They touched on many themes: feminism, self esteem, interdependence in relationships, loneliness, death- but they rarely saw any of the messaging through. Feels like an attempt to be deep, that is only partially successful. For example feminism conversations erred towards men vs women type arguments, in a way that a primary school student might argue for feminism in a class debate- i.e.men are stupid women are not; thus undermining the very essence of the women empowerment and equality, and missing the opportunity to create something more profound.
Verdict: Although not entirely bad, it’s definitely not a must see. If you haven’t seen it yet, my advice is wait for it to get to Netflix/tv, and then watch it for the light heartedness and fashion.
