With tons of trailers, press tours, and early screenings I didn't think I could be surprised anymore by movies, especially high budget super hero films. I went into Aquaman having been mostly disappointed with recent DC films, Wonder Woman being the exception, and only being there to support Jason Momoa. I came out loving it and can easily place it as my favorite comic book-based movie, Marvel or DC.
The acting was fantastic where even background roles were played by proven talent such as Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe. The chemistry between Momoa and Heard was a lot better than I expected. There was an enjoyable story to go with the nonstop high budget action scenes. James Wan's take on underwater Atlantis and the world building/creation was intriguing and captivating, both mentally and visually.
Lastly, its Jason Momoa practically playing an alternative Polynesian version of himself as Aquaman. Which is fantastic because he's one of the few in Hollywood who isn't self-absorbed and has worked hard over the years for his eventual success.
