Honestly, there is a lot of hostility towards this movie. With the majority of people comparing it to Star Wars or Dune, where I see a movie similar to Warhammer 40k or at least heavily inspired (And its perfectly fine).
To review something is to compare it to others, compared to star wars it doesn't have decades of lore and fandom to rise it to godhood in the common persons heart. And to compare it to dune, it doesn't have the literature backing its authenticity. Admittedly compared to those two titans in the film industry Rebel Moon is lacking.
This IS just an opinion of mine.
When I watch movies I don't analyze every single frame and gasp that this focus shot or that effect doesn't min/max every single instance. I don't pause and evaluate the level of acting from each character on a miniscule level (ex: oof how could she not have shown a more tearful expression in this 2 seconds).
What I do is simply watch the film, and give it my attention (if it can hold it, and this did) admittedly because I love the 40k/Dune/Star wars Lore and can see the inspiration taken from each and how it was put together to create a story. Were there parts I didn't like? Absolutely and that goes for even the most well loved movies ever made, there isn't a single film that I think is perfect because there are none. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy movies that don't reach the realm of perfection.
Take any one of the so called best movies:
2001: A space Odyssey (1968)
The Godfather (1972)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Schindler's List (1993)
Star Wars (1977)
The Shawshank redemption (1994)
The Dark Knight (2008)
I love them all, but did I think any of them were perfect? No
Did any one of them have perfect min/maxing of every single frame? No
And that's part of the beauty of film, all very different however all still great. You don't need a 'perfect' movie for it to be good.
I watched Rebel Moon as if I were reading a book, and I don't know about others but I don't trust a review of an entire book based off one chapter. Even if that chapter were so called 'bad' my questions would be, what are they leading up to? How will they do this? What is the history of this world? What happened in the past? What is the level of technology?
And piecing together my own personal answers (until a stated answer from the book is given).
All these Master of all things film (lighting, effects, tempo, sound, effects, etc) giving their opinion onto those who simply watch movies don't seem to remember how to just watch a movie. I'm quite proficient in my realm of profession but that doesn't mean I've forgotten how to just enjoy it, or how my opinion doesn't matter to some, or how to even understand how others not in my field would think of my work.
TL;DR - It was ight, lotta ppl complaining about this and that, we only got part 1 I say wait to judge it in its entirety.
