Turning Red was everything for me, and more. To see not only representation of my home city, but also my people and culture - Cantonese people hardly have any representation in Western media - everything just seemed to fall in line. Thank you, Domee Shi.
Second - music. Ludwig Goransson can not make a bad soundtrack. Everything is perfect to not only blend Chinese folk music and the techno-hiphop of the 90s/00s, but make it seamless as part of the season. I find myself replaying the movie just to listen to the music and how it just fits the scene so well. Kudos to Finneas and Billie Eilish for their excellent composition of the boy band 4*TOWN (come to think of it, Ming was right. Why are they called 4*TOWN if there's five members?)
Third of all - the writing was stellar. Went places I never expected, but I don't mind that, and I really enjoyed seeing Toronto represented as a mishmash of different cultures and appearances, including a lot of South Asian, Middle Eastern, and East Asian rep - all period-accurate, too. To see struggles I've been facing reflected on the screen? I can't tell you how badly Turning Red has become my new favourite movie.
