The one-star, angry reviews are frankly disturbing. Each one cries out “think of the children!” and claims that “OUT” is somehow manipulative and inappropriate. So the sexualization of young (13-17) girls and the force-fed romance featured in many animated classics in fact SUPPORTS ‘traditional family values’? Excuse me, what? It is only very recently that Disney has diversified and shifted focus to more general, family-friendly themes. Moana does not depict a romance between the main protagonists; Frozen ridicules the ‘love at first sight’ trope and focuses primarily on the bond between the two sisters. The message of love and acceptance portrayed in “OUT” is unsurprisingly lost on those who seek to discriminate against anyone outside of their own demographic or doctrine. The film demonstrates how an adult man is able to accept himself and grow the love in his family through communication and kindness. Imagine using children-who one day may identify as gay or straight or bisexual-as fodder for a baseless argument against love and equality. SHAME.
