To me this game was a little bit of a let down. Compared to the Mario golf toadstool tour, the game modes/ unlocks pale in comparison. Unlocking stages and characters was a tough ordeal but felt very rewarding. As for actual gameplay it seems they took away more than they added. In the old game you could follow the line path your ball could take, adjust the line path via curve(often wouldn’t work but helped see where shots would go), see the wind, see overhead view of the hole/ course. The ball flying through the air also seems pretty misleading in the new game, idk what it is but the ball just doesn’t seem like it’s where it’s at. Following the ball through the air(in the new game) also isn’t as fun as the old. In the old it would give multiple camera angles of the ball flying in and landing and you could tell when it would hit the ground and where. As for visuals, the new game looks better but is less creative in my opinion. It looks more like actual golf rather than MARIO golf. The speed golf is a fun mode that they added and the addition of being able to hit your ball to other holes is a nice touch for casual golf games. But touching up on a few bad things,DK blocks the ball/ view when putting, the line to follow your ball is pointless and in the way, the new ability shots seem like an annoying version of the old power shots (yoshi op) of course you can turn them off but then you still dont get a reward for hitting the top of the bar. Less fun after hole dances/ fails from the characters, AND NO LONGER CAN YOU TAUNT YOUR OPPONENTS WHILE THEY ARE SWINGING. Anyway the new game has some goods and bads. Personally I prefer the old game still to the new one but that is my humble opinion.
